The Argus Quartet continued its Birdfoot Artist Residency with a concert of Bartók, Guinivan, and Reich. This dynamic program showcased the quartet’s yearlong collaboration with composer/percussionist Eric Guinivan with performances of his String Quartet No. 1 (commissioned by the Argus Quartet with a prestigious Chamber Music America grant* and premiered in Amsterdam last October) and a new work written specifically for this residency. Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4 (a masterpiece of string quartet composition that Guinivan looked to for inspiration while writing his first quartet) and Steve Reich’s “Clapping Music” closed this exciting program.
*This commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.
• ARGUS QUARTET AT THE MARIGNY OPERA HOUSE
November 13, 2015, 8 PM
Marigny Opera House
725 St. Ferdinand Street
$25 Adults, $15 Students
The Argus Quartet closed the 2015 Birdfoot Fall Artist Residency with an eclectic celebration of the diverse ideas and musical languages of music written in the last 40 years. Humor abounded in both Andrew Norman’s “Different Strokes,” as well as in Gabriela Frank’s “Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout,” a composition fusing the classical tradition with Andean folk music. Argus reprised their showcase of two works by composer Eric Guinivan, including one written especially for this residency. A percussionist by training, the composer joined the quartet onstage for Steve Reich’s aptly titled “Clapping Music.”
