From the strictly proscribed dance steps of the court of Louis XIV to Stravinsky’s ancient pagan ‘Rite’ in which a young maiden must dance herself to death to ensure the arrival of spring, the Birdfoot Festival explores the physical side of the social contract. Miss Manners famously wrote that “Etiquette is a little social contract we make so that we will restrain some of our more provocative impulses.” But do we?
