Johannes Brahms: Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Cello in A minor, Op. 114 (1891)
Henri Dutilleux: Ainsi la Nuit (1973-76)
Felix Mendelssohn: Quintet no. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 87 (1845)

Three beloved masterpieces close out the Birdfoot Festival’s 2017 season: Johannes Brahms wrote his clarinet trio in a renewed burst of inspiration, after having already declared his retirement. Henri Dutilleux’s Ainsi La Nuit (Thus the Night) is one of the twentieth century’s musical treasures, a delicate and ravishing mosaic that recalls literature and the fragmentation of memory. Last but not least, Felix Mendelssohn’s beloved String Quintet (explore this work in depth with the artists during Birdfoot Backstage on June 1) plumbs the depths of human emotion and reaches the heights with an explosive lust for life. A concert you’ll wish you could hear twice!
